Taiwan is famous for their old refined Ficus bonsai and trees of this size are now impossible to import. It is a triple trunk (clump style), the side branches were perfectly grafted decades ago. This tree was originally started from a cutting in the 1960's.</image:caption>

Piles of dirty laundry and fabric remnants left from face-mask-making intruded my studio. Making peace with the situation, I began to find them fascinating. They helped me accept a “new messy world within a messy old world", and reminded me of the Chinese Scholar Rock tradition for its rationale and creative expression. <image:caption>Mary Graham Stone Waves 2021. 24" x 36”, oil on linen mounted on panel. “I paint the seethe and stillness of wild, unhuman life, the incessant transformation of what ancient Ch’an poets called “the ten thousand things.” And in that regard my work honors presence and absence at once, as a sort of double-fidelity. A painting comes into being as an unfolding from within, and is both anchored and sustained by an emotional connection to a sense of space from which images emerge. Plainly manifest in this painting is the bit of ledge buttressed by krummholz spruce, but equally “there” are mighty mountains shrouded by mist and cloud. “</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pale Wave, 2020, beech and scorched oak 18”h x 15 x 6” "Interpreting the Natural: Contemporary Visions of Scholars Rocks" opened on Oct 21st 2021 at the Korean Cultural Center in NYC http://www.koreanculture.org/gallery-korea/2020/10/21/interpreting-the-natural-contemporary-visions-of-scholars-rocks and was on view through Nov 30th. With the resurgence of fascination about these rocks (thanks to the film Parasite) and the timeliness of how we think about the human relationship with nature, the KCC is very excited to be able to host this show and its accompanying online conversation series. I am speaking: "Portals: Collecting and Interpreting Evocative Rocks" Thursday October 29th @ 5p with Dr. Thomas Elias, Founder of the Viewing Stone Association of North America, who will lend one of his Korean viewing stones to the show, Dr. Virginia Moon, Associate Curator of Korean Art at LACMA and two artists in the show: Andy Moerlein and Elisa Pritzker. This talk will focus on the art of stone collecting, both as an historic tradition and as a contemporary practice. Why contemporary artists have translated this aesthetic into new art forms and how each individual rock speaks about a larger landscape will be addressed in this talk. See the entire series and join the zoom conversations here: http://www.koreanculture.org/gallery-korea/2020/10/21/interpreting-the-natural-contemporary-visions-of-scholars-rocks</image:caption>

<image:caption>In February 2014 members of the Boston Sculptors Gallery together with a group of Peruvian artists presented Visions/Visiónes, in Cusco, Peru, in the Qorikancha Museum, Santo Domingo Convent. This Peruvian Convent and Museum are built on the foundation of one of the most important Inca temple sites near Machu Picchu. To make work for the exhibit, I spent four weeks in residence at the ESCUELA DE BELLAS ARTES, the art school in Cusco. I was invited to occupy a large studio to carve Peruvian wood for the show. One of my drawings was also selected for an exhibition at a nearby collectors home.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ROCK GARDEN TUTORIAL The classic garden at the Ryoanji Temple places an expectation upon the viewer. Patterns of raked gravel surrounding monumental stones present a language of seascape and islands. The ambition of this traditional rock garden is not representational. The design intent is an evocation of place. The deep shade of a white pine grove – with its perfect vertical trunks and dappled sunlight – is a stage for this drama of buoyancy. Mass is redefined and belief is suspended as insubstantial sapling boats levitate boulders. The event provokes a visceral response. One’s body calculates the weight and is confounded. Boats rely on the surface intersection of air and water. The boats in ROCK GARDEN TUTORIAL transform the sensation of solid. Weighty imaginings buoyed preposterously.</image:caption>

A pattern of sensations: Reds of the dropped needles; Bark dark of the trunks; Rich green of the live needles. A pattern of sharded light in sunshine - a burnt glow in overcast.</image:caption>

<image:caption>CENTERING Long ago I collected a raven skull. Its bleached white is a vivid contrast to the soot black of its vital owner. Two raven skulls hung in a pair, poised over a grounded pair, beaks to beaks inspire meditation, centering. A soundtrack accompanies this piece. It presents a lifetime of bird calls familiar to me: bobwhite and raven, magpie and cardinal, titmouse and chickadee. Birds from my homes in Alaska, Ohio, Oregon, New York and New Hampshire mingle in my memory as I seek to define a single balance point.</image:caption>
